Who are Stag & Bruce?
Stag & Bruce, based in Edinburgh, is a family enterprise established by John and Moira Gillespie who share over 80 years of design and manufacturing experience in the Scottish textile industry.
Where does the name come from?
Stag & Bruce is a game our daughters invented when they were children. We might share the rules here one day!
What is Pure New Wool?
The wool fibre in 100% Pure New Wool yarn is being used for the first time and has not been reconstituted from recycled garments. This produces a superior product because the individual fibres are undamaged, in both structure and length. When previously woven or knitted fabrics are recycled and re-spun, the fibre is unavoidably damaged and is often labelled ‘All Wool’.
Where does your yarn come from?
Our yarns are sourced from various mills and might be 'last seasons' colours or small batches that make them impractical for larger businesses to work with. It's these yarns which we use to create our limited range of throws, blankets, scarves, shawls and capes.
What is ethically sourced yarn?
We describe ethically sourced yarn as yarn which is surplus or leftover from a larger order, but has nonetheless been manufactured to modern ethical standards and which might otherwise be discarded or destroyed.
Where are your Throws and Blankets manufactured?
We work closely with weavers and finishers both here in Scotland and in Yorkshire who manufacture our throws, blankets, scarves, shawls and capes.
Where can I find out more about textile processes?
We have prepared this guide to various textile processes.
What is the difference between our Throws and our Blankets?
Our Throws are made from Lambswool and are slightly lighter in weight than our more robust Blankets.
How durable are your Throws and Blankets?
Our throws and blankets are manufactured to a high standard, and the threads are densely constructed to provide a more durable product, which can be used as soft furnishings at home and picnics outdoors.
Are they suitable for covering a sofa or armchair?
They are suitable to throw over a chair or sofa but not for suitable for upholstery.
How do I clean my throw?
We'd always recommend dry cleaning.
What are your design inspirations?
We spend time with our yarn suppliers, selecting yarns which might have been leftover from a larger order. We'll use the yarn shades we've selected as the starting point for our limited edition, small batch designs. Patterns, scale and colour combinations are influenced by the traditions and heritage of Scottish design.
